History
Bessemer City’s history dates back to 1754, when King George II granted land to James Ormand, who established the Ormand Mining Company. The Old Ormand Furnace is the oldest stack of its kind in the entire country and still stands to this day, serving as the site for the family’s annual reunion. Bessemer City was officially chartered in 1893, during which time just a few families lived in town. The population of Bessemer City saw impressive growth with the introduction of the railroad, and by 1900, the population reached 600. One of the town’s largest employers originating in the late 20th century was FMC Lithium Plant, which is still in operation today.
