History
The Occaneechi and Sappony tribes were the first inhabitants of the region now known as Roxboro. German and English settlers were some of the first Europeans to arrive in the 1770s. In 1791, neighboring Caswell County was divided into two equal squares, one of which eventually became Person County.
The county was named after Revolutionary War General Thomas Person, a generous donor and trustee at the University of North Carolina. Another Revolutionary War general named Stephen Moore had a love for the county, proclaiming it a “Lost Eden”, vowing to return one day and make it his home. He kept his promise, as he built his home on what is now called Mount Tirzah in 1793. His home still exists to this day and belongs to his descendants. The area was known as Moccasin Gap, until it was incorporated as Roxboro in 1855. The J.A. Long family played an important role in the town’s development, investing in the city’s railroad and banking industries in the late 1800s.
