History
Like many communities in this region, Elon was initially established because of its proximity to the railroad track. The town was located at the crossroads of the track running between Goldsboro and Charlotte, and the area became known as “Mill Point” because it was a shipping point for local cotton mills.
The town saw some growth thereafter, and a post office was built in 1888, establishing the area even more. The following year, the local Christian assembly made plans to open an institution for higher learning. At the time, the area was heavily wooded with oak trees, so they chose the name “Elon,” the Hebrew name for oak. In 1890, the college opened its doors.
The town of Mill Point slowly began to grow, adding stables and a blacksmith, and the town was incorporated under the name Elon College in 1893. More than 100 years later, in 2001, the school changed its name to Elon University and the town became simply “Elon.”
