Most of the early settlers in the late 1700s arrived to the area from North Carolina and Virginia, and were veterans of the Revolutionary War. War veteran Joseph Woodruff bought 200 acres in the area. One of Woodruff’s sons, Thomas, remained in the area, hoping to live to see the town founded, but passed away before it was chartered in 1874. His two sons played an instrumental role in the evolution of the town, so it was named in Thomas Woodruff’s honor. When the town was chartered, new businesses arrived to town, but Woodruff saw major growth with the arrival of the railroad in 1885.
