History
Creedmoor originated in 1885, serving primarily as a railroad depot for the Oxford and Clarksville Railroad Company at the time. The region had thriving tobacco and cotton industries, which meant there was a large demand for mules to help with transporting the crops without stepping on them, as their hooves were smaller than those of a horse. With about 40 train car-loads of mules pulled into town each year, Creedmoor became the largest mule trading center in the world, and was even nicknamed “Mule Town.” The mule trade was no longer a major part of the town’s economy in the mid-1950s and the slogan “One of the Largest Retail Livestock Markets in North Carolina” was removed from Creedmoor’s official letterhead. Creedmoor was incorporated in 1905, named after a traveling salesman named Creed Moor who sold dictionaries throughout the town.
